காணின் குவளை கவிழ்ந்து நிலன்நோக்கும்
மாணிழை கண்ணொவ்வேம் என்று.
(குறள் 1124: நலம்புனைந்துரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
காணின் – கண்டால் (அவள் கண்ணை)
குவளை – குவளை மலர்
கவிழ்ந்து – வெட்கி தலை கவிழும்
நிலன் நோக்கும் – பூமியைப் பார்க்கும் (மீண்டும் பார்க்கவியலாது)
மாணிழை – அழகிய அணிகளை அணிந்த பெண்ணவளின்
கண்ணொவ்வேம் என்று – கண்ணழகுக்குத் தாம் ஒப்பிலோமென்று.
அழகிய குவளைமலர், அவ்வழகிய அணிகளைப் பூண்ட பெண்ணின் கண்ணழகைக் கண்டு வெட்கும், நிலம் நோக்கும், தாமவளின் கண்ணழகுக்கு ஒப்பாக மாட்டோமென்று, என்று அழகிய தன் காதலியின் கண்ணழகைப் பாராட்டும் தலைவன் பிறரிடம் பெருமிதப்படுவதாக நயமிகு கற்பனை.
Transliteration:
kaNin kuvaLai kavizhndu nilannOkkum
mANizai kaNNovvEm enRu
kaNin – when it see her eyes
kuvaLai – the KuvaLai flower (purple water-lily)
kavizhndu – put down
nilan nOkkum – and look at the floor
mANizai – love decorated with jewels
kaNNovvEm enRu – will not compare to her eyes.
The purple water-lily will put its head down in shame, thinking that its beauty cannot compare to the beautiful eyes of the girl decorated with jewels, if it can see. A verse as if the man in lover prides about his lady-loves’ beautiful eyes!
“If the water-lily can see, in shame it will look down the ground;
it cannot compare to jewel-decorated girls eyes be spell-bound”
