மதியும் மடந்தை முகனும் அறியா
பதியின் கலங்கிய மீன்.
(குறள் 1126: நலம்புனைந்துரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
மதியும் – வெண் நிலா இது
மடந்தை முகனும் – அழகுப் பெண்ணின் முகம் இது
அறியா – என்று அறியமாட்டாது
பதியின் கலங்கிய – நில்லாது மயங்கிச் சுற்றிக்கொண்டே இருக்குமா
மீன் – விண்மீன்களாம் நட்சத்திரக்கூட்டமெல்லாம்
மீண்டும் வள்ளுவரின் கற்பனை ஓட்டத்தைக் காட்டும் குறள். தலைமகன் விண்மீன்கள் ஓரிடத்தில் நில்லாமல் திரிந்துகொண்டே இருப்பதைக் காண்கிறான். அவை அவ்வாறு மயங்கித் திரிவதற்கு காரணம் என்னவெனில், அவற்றால் வாகனத்துச் சந்திரனுக்கும், தன்னுடைய காதல் கிழத்தியின் முகத்துக்கும் வேற்றுமைத் தெரியாமல் மயங்கியே, சுற்றிச் சுற்றிப் பார்க்கின்றனவாம்.
இதிலே வள்ளுவர் காலத்து வானவியல் அறிவியல் உண்மையையும் கலந்து கற்பனையை ஓட விடுவது கவனிக்கத்தக்கது. நம்மை நிலையாக வைத்துக்கொண்டால், நம்மைச் சுற்றியே மற்றவை வருவதாக எண்ணம் எல்லோருக்கும் வருவதுண்டு. அதனாலேயே நட்சத்திரக்கூட்டம் நம்மையும் சந்திரனையும் சுற்றிவருவதாக உருவகத்து உள்ளார் என்பது கண்கூடு.

Madiyum madandai mukanum aRiyA
Padiyin kalangiya mIn
Madiyum – (To know) if it is the moon
madandai mukanum – (or) the face of the beautiful maiden
aRiyA – not able to diiferentiate
Padiyin kalangiya – they just go around again and again in confusion
mIn – the stars
Once again a verse, showcasing the imaginative spree of VaLLuvar – He was not just a preacher saint but a poet of exquisite imagination and taste. The man in love sees the stars not staying in one place; they keep going around again and again. He sees the moon and the face of his love-maiden and he knows now, the reason. With his sixth sense, if he is not able to differentiate between the two, no wonder, the stars are confused beyond comprehension and keep going around to find which one is a face or moon!
It is common to go around two objects which are alike to figure out which is what! Also the verse showcases the knowledge of astronomical observations such as the star keep going in circles. From the stationary view-point on earth, that would be the observation for anyone. Though everything is in motion, the very moon is seen nightly, relatively a stationary position compared to stars that appear once a month for human eyes. Is what has been recorded here.
