கடலன்ன காமம் உழந்தும் மடலேறாப்
பெண்ணின் பெருந்தக்க தில்.
(குறள் 1137: நாணுத்துறவுரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
கடலன்ன – கடலளவு போல் மிகுந்த
காமம் உழந்தும் – காம நோயிலே உழன்றாலும்
மடலேறாப் – மடலேறுதலைக் கருதாத
பெண்ணின் – பெண்ணின் நாண் காக்கும் தகைமைபோல்
பெருந்தக்கது இல் – பெரிய தகைமை ஒன்றுமில்லை
காமம் என்பது இருபாலருக்கும் ஒன்றே! ஆயினும் நாணைத் துறக்கும் ஆணைப்போன்றாள் இல்லை பெண். கடல்போலே மிக்க காமத்தை அவளும் கொண்டிருந்தாலும், அந்த துன்பத்தைப் பொருத்துக்கொண்டு தான் மடலூர்தலைக் கருதாதிருக்கிறாளே, அந்த பெண்ணின் நாண் காக்கும் தகைமைக்கு விஞ்சியது ஒன்றுமில்லை என்று பெண்ணின் நாணுதுறவாமையை பாராட்டிக்கூறும் குறள் இது. இக்குறளின் கருத்தை வழிமொழிந்திருக்கின்றன சீவக சிந்தாமணியும், சூளாமணியும்.
“கண்ணும் வாளற கைவளை சோருமால்
புண்ணும் போன்று புலம்புமென் நெஞ்சரோ
எண்ணில் காமம் எரிப்பினும் மேல்செலாப்
பெண்ணின் மிக்கது பெண்ணல தில்லையே” (சீவக சிந்தாமணி)
“கண்ணிலாம் கவினொளிக் காளை மார்திறத்து
உண்ணிலா எழுதரு காம ஊழெரி
வெண்ணிலாச் சுடர்சுட விரிந்து நாண்விடாப்
பெண்ணலாற் பிறிதுயிர் பெரிய தில்லையே” (சூளாமணி)
Transliteration:
kaDalanna kAmam uzhandum maDalERAp
peNNin peruntakka dil
kaDalanna – as big as the ocean
kAmam uzhandum – though dwell in the lust
maDalERAp – not climbing the palm-horse (shedding shyness)
peNNin – for maidens’
peruntakka dil – greatness there is none equal
Lusting the union of opposite sex is common to both genders; but a lady is not like man who can goto the extent of shedding his shame. Though as big as the measure of ocean is her lust for her love, a lady would not consider climbing the palm-horse to profess her desire; there is no greatness bigger than that virtue of a lady, says this verse in praise of women not sacrificing shame for the lust. Of course,later works such Cheevaka ChintAmaNi and SuLAmani have also sung along the sameline, praising women of such character.
There is none greater than the greatness of women that would climb not
Palm-horse, though in the conjugal lust, like men, they are also caught”
