அறிகிலார் எல்லாரும் என்றேஎன் காமம்
மறுகின் மறுகும் மருண்டு.
(குறள் 1139: நாணுத்துறவுரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
அறிகிலார் – அறியமாட்டார்
எல்லாரும் என்றே – யாவருமென்று (எதை)
என் காமம் – என்னுள் தலைவன்பால் கொண்ட காமத்தை
மறுகின் – தெருவில்
மறுகும் – சுழலும், திரியும்
மருண்டு – மயங்கி
இன்னும் பலரும் என்னுடைய தலைவன்பால் நான்கொண்ட காதலினால் மீதுறும் காமத்தை அறிந்திலார் என்று, என்னுடைய காமமே தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்திக்கொள்ளுமே, தெருவில் மயங்கி சுழன்றுத் திரிந்து என்று பெண் கூறுவதாக பெரும்பாலும் எல்லா உரையாசிரியர்களும் யாத்துள்ளனர்.
ஆயினும், அது பெண்ணின் பெரும் தகையை இரண்டு குறள்களுக்கு முன்பாகச் சொல்லிவிட்டு, இக்குறளில் அதற்கு மாறாக தன்வயமில்லாது, காமத்தை கட்டுறுத்தமுடியாதவளாகச் சொல்லியிருத்தல் கூடுமா என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறது. ஆனால் காமம் என்று கூறியது தன் மேல் காதல் வயப்பட்டு காமம் பொங்கியவனைப் பற்றியே என்று கொண்டால், தலைவன், பிறர் அறியார் என்று, தெருவில் மயங்கித் திரிந்து, தன் காமத்தை மடலூர்ந்து தெரிவித்துக் கொள்ளுகிறான் என்றே தலைவி கூறுகிறாள் என்பது புலப்படும்.
Transliteration:
aRigilAr ellArum enREen kAmam
maRugin maRugum maruNDu
aRigilAr – Would not know
ellArum enRE – everyone, thinking as such
en kAmam – the lust I bear in me for my lover
maRugin – on the street
maRugum – wandering
maruNDu – being dazed
Since most don’t know the lust I have for my love, my lust will reveal itself by wandering in the streets, being dazed, says the lustful maiden; so goes the interpretation of most commentators!
But, the above interpretation is contrary to the exalted nature of the maiden exemplified two verses ago; So it is questionable that VaLLuvar intended the meaning that way. If we interpret the word “kAmam” referring to her lover, who is lustful, then the meaning would be different as if the maiden is talking about her lovers’ lust; he will, to make known to others, will go wandering on the streets professing his lust for her, by climbing the palm-horse.
“Thinking most do not know, to announce, the lust
Will wander, dazed, on streets to push and insist”
