துப்பின் எவனாவர் மன்கொல் துயர்வரவு
நட்பினுள் ஆற்று பவர்.

துப்பின் – பகைக்கின்
எவன் ஆவர் மன்கொல் – எப்படி மாறுவாரோ ஏது செய்வாரோ?
துயர்வரவு – துன்பம் தரக்கூடியவற்றைத் வரச் செய்வதை
நட்பினுள் – என்னோடு நட்போடு இருக்கையிலேயே
ஆற்றுபவர் – செய்வதில் வல்லவராயிருக்கும் என் காதலர்
துப்பு என்னும் சொல் பகையைக் குறிக்குமாறு அகராதிகளில் காணக் கிடைக்கவில்லையெனினும், பரிமேலழகர், “துப்பெதிர்ந்தோர்க்கே யுள்ளாச் சேய்மையன் நட்பெதிர்ந்தோர்க்கே அங்கையண்மையன்” என்னும் புறநானூற்று வரிகளைக் சுட்டி, அச்சொல் பகைமையைச் சொல்வதாக உரை செய்துள்ளார்.
குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து: என்னோடு நட்பாக இருக்கையிலே, எனக்குத் துன்பம் தருவதாகிய என்னை விட்டு பிரிதலைச் செய்து, எனக்குப் பசலை வரச்செய்வபவர், என்னைப் பகைத்துச் சென்றாரானால், என்ன செய்வாரோ? என்று தலைவி வருந்துகிறாளாம் தோழியிடம். இதில் பகை வெறுப்பின் காரணமாக ஏற்படுவதால், பகைத்து என்பதை வெறுத்து என்று கொள்வது இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் ஒழுக்கிற்கு பொருத்தமாகும்.
Transliteration:
Tuppin evanAvar mankol? Tuyarvaravu
naTpinuL ARRu bavar?
Tuppin – if he develops hatred
Evan Avar mankol? – what other things would he do?
Tuyarvaravu – causing misery
naTpinuL – even while on friendly terms with me
ARRubavar? – that who does ( cause misery) so.
Though the word “tuppu” is not seen in dictionaries, meaning “enmity or hatred”, Parimelazhagar cites a couple of lines from “PuranAnUru” to justify his interpretation which has served others too.
The maiden that is separated from her lover and is feeling miserable, to her friend, says: Even while he is in friendly, amorous terms, he has given me misery by his act of leaving me; I dread to think, what he would do, if he was not friendly and left in hatred!” Better than the word enmity, which does not seem appropriate in the context of love, hatred could be used, which only is the reason for possible enmity”
