123: (Lamenting the arrival of evening – பொழுது கண்டிரங்கல்)
[Maiden that suffers the pain of her lover going away, dreads the onset of evening, every day when she starts recounting her wonderful evenings and ensuing nights that she spent in her lovers’ embrace. At least the day-time occupies her with daily chores, but the evening, as the day winds up, makes the absence felt strongly and hence the lament intensely]

மாலையோ அல்லை மணந்தார் உயிருண்ணும்
வேலைநீ வாழி பொழுது.
(குறள் 1221: பொழுது கண்டிரங்கல் அதிகாரம்)
மாலையோ – நீ வெறும் அந்தி சாயும் நேரம், மாலைப் பொழுதுதானா?
அல்லை – இல்லவே இல்லை.
மணந்தார் உயிருண்ணும் – மணந்து, இன்று தம் கணவரை பிரிந்து இருப்பவர் உயிரைத் தின்னும்
வேலைநீ – கூரிய வேலே நீ
வாழி பொழுது – நீ நன்றாக வாழ்வாயாக
பொழுதே, நீ முன்னர் வந்து சென்ற அந்தி நேரம்போல் இப்போது இல்லை; மணந்து இன்று தம் கணவரை பிரிந்து இருப்பவர் உயிரைத் தின்னும் கூரிய வேலாகிய ஆயுதமாஉ இருக்கிறாய். இருக்கட்டும் நீ நன்றாக வாழ்வாயாக, நாங்கள் துன்பத்துழன்றாலும்!
அந்தி சாயும் நேரம் காதலிலாழ்ந்த அணங்கினர் ஆவலோடு எதிர் நோக்கும் நேரம். அன்புக்குரியவரோடு கூடியிருக்கும் இரவுக்கு உறவாயிருக்கும் நேரம். அதுவே காதலரைப் பிரிந்து வாழும் காதற் பெண்டிருக்கு துன்பம் தரும் நேரமாகிவிடும்.
கலித்தொகை வரிகள் மகளிரின் அந்நிலையை இவ்வாறு கூறுகின்றன.
“வாலிழை மகளிர் உயிர்பொதி அவிழ்க்கும்
காலை ஆவ தறியார்
மாலை என்மனார் மயங்கி யோரே” (கலி: 119:14,6)
Transliteration:
mAlaiyO allai maNandAr uyiruNNum
vElainI vAzhi pozhudu
mAlaiyO – Are you the same evening (that we used to look forward to)
allai – No, you’re not the same
maNandAr uyiruNNum – you eat the lives of those married women that endure separation from the their respective lovers
vElainI – being the spear
vAzhi pozhudu – at least you live well ( a tone of sarcasm)
O! Evening, now, you be happy! After all it is not your concern that you stand as the spear that kill the lives of married women who are enduring the separation of their respective beloved companions; and you ‘re not like how you used to be, when we looked forward to your coming in as it had given us the happiness of being in the company and embrace of our beloved.
“You are not the evening that you used to be, but a killing spear
for married women, who endure separation of beloved and dear”
