முயக்கிடைத் தண்வளி போழப் பசப்புற்ற
பேதை பெருமழைக் கண்.
(குறள் 1239: உறுப்பு நலனழிதல் அதிகாரம்)
முயக்கிடைத் – தழுவுகையில் ஊடாக
தண் வளி போழப் – குளிர்ந்த காற்று சிறிதளவுக்கு விலக்க, பிளக்க
பசப்புற்ற – அதனால் தலைவன் பிரிந்தானோ என்று பசலை படர்ந்தன
பேதை – அறிவால் எது உண்மை அல்லது மயக்கம் என்று அறியாத பெண்ணாளில்
பெருமழைக் கண் – பெரிதாக மழைபோல் ஒழுகி அதனால குளிர்ந்த கண்கள்
தலைவனும், தலைவியும் தழுவியிருந்த காலையில், குளிர்ந்த காற்றானது உடாகப் புகுந்து, அவர்களுக்கிடையேயான இணக்கத்தை பிளக்க, விலக்க, அதனால் அறிவுமயக்கதில் உள்ள பெண்ணின் பொழிமழைக் குளிர் கண்கள் பசலைப் படர்ந்து பொலிவிழந்தனவாம். இக்குறளில் வள்ளுவர் பேதை என்று பொருந்தச் சொல்லியிருப்பது கவனிக்கத்தக்கது. இது உண்மை, அல்லது மயக்கம் என்று உய்த்துணரமுடியாத நிலையிலிருக்கும் பெண் என்பது காதற்தலைவிக்கு மிகவும் பொருந்துவது. அதேபோல், அப்பிரிவினால் அவள் அழுவது பெருமழைப் போன்றது என்றும் சொல்லி, அப்பெருமழை பொழிவதால் குளிர்ந்த கண்கள் என்றும் சொல்லியிருப்பது நுணுக்கமான அவதானிப்பு.
கண்கள் பசலைப் பூப்பது, சங்ககாலந்தொட்டு வரும் கற்பனை; பல எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்கள் நற்றிணை, குறுந்தொகை, ஐங்குறுநூறு, கலித்தொகை போன்ற இலக்கியங்களில் உள்ளன.
Transliteration:
muyakkiDaiy taNvaLi pOzhap pasppuRRa
pEdai perumazhaik kaN
muyakkiDait – When in embrace
taN vaLi pOzhap – coming in between, the cool breeze, separates them a little
pasppuRRa – becoming pale
pEdai – the maiden who does not know truth from perception
perumazhaik kaN – eyes of coolness with torrential rains.
When the maiden and her man are in close embrace, cool breeze gets in between them, creating a little gap between them; the maiden thinks that her lover is ready to leave her and her cool eyes go pale for that reason. The choicest usage of word “pEdai” is so apt in this verse reflecting the state of the maiden who is not able to decipher the truth from perception, thus thinking even the negligible gap created by the cool breez is separation from her beloved. Another word “perumazhai” indicates the tears in her eyes because of her thinking. When such torrential pour is there, the environment becomes cool and so her eyes are implied to become cool too.
“As the cool breeze goes between the tight embrace,
maidens’ cool eyes of torrential pour go pale in daze”
