நிணந்தீயில் இட்டன்ன நெஞ்சினார்க்கு உண்டோ
புணர்ந்தூடி நிற்பேம் எனல்.

நிணந் தீயில் இட்டன்ன – நெய்யை தீயில் இட்டார்போல
நெஞ்சினார்க்கு உண்டோ – காதலை நெஞ்சில் பற்றி எரியச் செய்தவர்க்கு இருக்குமோ?
புணர்ந்து ஊடி நிற்பேம் எனல் – தலைவனைக் கூடி பின்னர் பிணங்கியிருப்போம் என்னல்?
நிணம் என்பதை கொழுப்பு என்று பொதுவாக அனைத்து உரையாசிரியர்களும், அகராதியில் சொல்லப்படும் பொருளைக் கொண்டு, அது தீயிலிட கரைந்துவிடும் என்று கூறி, நெஞ்சம் இளகுதலைக் குறிக்கின்றனர். பரிமேலழகர் உரையும் அவ்வாறே உள்ளது.
ஆனால் நிணம் என்பது நெய்யினையும் குறிப்பதால், தீயில் நெய்யை இட்டால் இல்லாமல் போவது உண்மையென்றாலும் அது தீயை வளர்க்கவே செய்யும். இங்கு தீயிலிடுவது என்பது காதல் வேட்கையாகிய தீயில் கூடியிருக்கும் இன்பமாகிய நெய்யைப் பற்றியே. காதல் வேட்கைகயாம் தீ பற்றி எரிய, கூடியபின்னர், கூடினார்க்கு நிறையென்பது கருத்தில் கொள்ளக்கூடிய ஒன்றில்லை. பிணங்கிப் பிரிவேன் என்பதும் கூடுமோ?
நெஞ்சம் கரைந்தாலும் நிறையழியும், காதல் வேட்கையாம் தீ வளரினும் அது அழியும்.
Transliteration:
niNantIyil iTTanna nenjinArkku uNDO
puNarndUDi niRpEm enal?
niNan tIyil iTTanna – As if ghee was poured into fire
nenjinArkku uNDO – that who have let the flame of love to grow in the heart
puNarnd(u)– after amorous embrace
UDi niRpEm enal? – is it possible to be away in pretense anger?
Most commentators have interpreted this as “Fat” which would dissolve in the fire and compared it to maidens’ heart melting the moment she has been in amorous embrace of her beloved. Perhaps based on Parimelazhagar’s commentary.
The word “niNam” also means “Ghee; If it is poured in fire, it would only fire grow more. Similarly, after adding the ghee of being in amorous embrace with the beloved, it would be difficult to quell the fire of lustful desire for the maiden and she would not care so much about modesty then. To think she would leave him after such embrace is not possible.
Of course, whether the heart melts or the fire of love grows, both will ignore modesty!
