கண்ணிறைந்த காரிகைக் காம்பேர்தோட் பேதைக்குப்
பெண்நிறைந்த நீர்மை பெரிது.
(குறள் 1272: குறிப்பறிவுறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
கண்ணிறைந்த காரிகைக் – என் கண்ணிறைந்த அழகியாம் என் காதலி
காம்பு ஏர் தோள் – வளைந்த மூங்கிலைப்போல் தோள்களை உடையவள்
பேதைக்குப் – மடமை என்னும் குணமுடைய அவளுக்கு
பெண் நிறைந்த நீர்மை – பெண்களுக்கே உரிய பண்பு நலன்கள் நிறைந்திருப்பதுதான்
பெரிது – மிக்கானதாம்
வளைந்த மூங்கிலைப்போன்ற நேர்த்தியான தோள்களை உடைய, என் கண்களை நிறைத்திருக்கும் அழகியாம், மடமென்னும் பண்பு நிறைந்த என் காதலிக்கு பெண்மை நிறைந்திருக்கும் பண்பு நலனே மேன்மையானதாம், என்று நினைப்பதைத் தோழிக்குத் தலைவன் உணர்த்துவதாக அமைந்த குறள்.
Transliteration:
kaNNiRainda kArigaik kAmpErtOT pEdaikkup
peNniRainda nIrmai peridu
kaN NiRainda kArigaik – she is a beauty filling my eyes;
kAmpu Er tOL – and has shoulders like beautifully bent bamboo
pEdaikkup – she has innocent ignorance which is befitting a girl like her
peN niRainda nIrmai – she has excellent virtues of a fine lady
peridu – which she has in abundance,
My dear maiden, who fills my eyes with her beauty, and shoulders of beautifully bent baboo has innocent ignorance and has in abundance, the excellent virtues required for a lady of dignity, indicates the man to her maidens’ friend, in this verse.
“The beauty that fills my eyes, with her shoulders beautiful like bamboo
innocently ignorant, has all virtues of modesty typical of a womans’ hue”
