செறிதொடி செய்திறந்த கள்ளம் உறுதுயர்
தீர்க்கும் மருந்தொன்று உடைத்து.
(குறள் 1275: குறிப்பறிவுறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
செறி தொடி – நெருக்கமாக அடுக்கப்பட்ட வளையலகளை அணிந்தவள்
செய்து இறந்த கள்ளம் – காட்டி மறைத்த குறிப்பு (காதலை உணர்த்துவது)
உறுதுயர் தீர்க்கும் – என்னுடைய உள்ளத்திலுள்ள துயரைப் போக்கும்
மருந்தொன்று உடைத்து – அருமருந்தை தன்னகத்தே கொண்டது
நெருக்கமாக அடுக்கப்பட்ட வளையல்களை அணிந்த என்காதலி என்னிடத்தில் காட்டி மறைத்த குறிப்பொன்று, அவள் காதலை எனக்கு உறுதி செய்தது. அதுவே என்னுடைய உள்ளத்தில் உள்ள துயரைப் போக்கக்கூடிய அருமருந்து ஒன்றையும் தன்னகத்தே கொண்டது.
செறிதொடி என்பது பெண்ணின் மனமகிழ்ச்சியை உணர்த்துவதாக உள்ளவொன்று! அவள் என்மேல் கோபித்திருக்கிறாளோ என்று ஐயுற்றேன், அதனால் துயருற்றேன்; ஆனால் அவள் காட்டி மறைத்த குறிப்பால் அத்துயர் என்னை அகன்றது என்கிறான் காதற்தலைவன்.
Transliteration:
seRitoDi seidiRanda kaLLam uRutuyar
tIrkum marundonRu uDaittu
seRi toDi – maiden who wears closely packed bangles (implying her happy state)
seid(u) iRanda kaLLam – the signs she showed and hid (for me to see)
uRu tuyar tIrkum – remedy for the great sorrow in me
marundonRu uDaittu – has a medicine in itself
She that wears closely packed bangles in her hands (implying her happy stated of mind), by showing signs of her love for me, and hiding, has given the remedy for the great sorrow in my heart, feels assured her man.
The closely arranged bangles only imply her happy state of mind. The man was worried and sorrowful thinking that perhaps she was angry; by seeing the signs, now he feels relieved.
