அலந்தாரை அல்லல்நோய் செய்தற்றால் தம்மைப்
புலந்தாரைப் புல்லா விடல்.
(குறள் 1303: புலவி அதிகாரம்)
அலந்தாரை – துன்பமுற்றார்க்கு, குலைந்தார்க்கு
அல்லல்நோய் – மேலும் துன்பத்தைச்
செய்தற்றால் – செய்தாற்போலாம்
தம்மைப் – தம்மை (காதற்பெண்ணணைக் குறித்து)
புலந்தாரைப் – ஊடியவரை
புல்லா விடல் – மேலும் ஊடி கூடாது விடல்.
தம்மை ஊடியவரோடு மேலும் ஊடி கூடாமல் இருத்தல் என்பது, ஏற்கனவே துன்பத்தால் நிலை குலைந்தவர்க்கு, மேலும் துன்பத்தைச் செய்தாற்போலாம். இக்குறளும் ஊடலுக்கு ஓரு அளவு இருக்கவேண்டியதை வலியுறுத்தும் குறள். ஊடல் துன்பம் சென்ற குறளின் கருத்தைப்போல் சரியான அளவுக்கு விஞ்சினால் துன்பமுற்றவருக்கும் மேலும் துன்பம். அத்துன்பத்தை செய்பவருக்கும் அது துன்பையே தரும்.

alandArai – to those that are miserable
allalnOi – more misery
seydaRRAl – as if causing
tammaip – to self (implied for the maiden)
pulandAraip – to that who is in love quarrel
pullA viDal – not making up with fond embrace.
To extend the love quarrel beyond a point is like causing more misery to that who is already miserable, the maiden thinks in this verse. This verse also suggests the limit of love-quarrel as the previous verse. Extending the love-quarrel beyond a point gives pain to both in love.
“Not making up with the embrace extending love-quarrel
is to give more misery to someone that is miserable”
