ஊடலின் உண்டாங்கோர் துன்பம் புணர்வது
நீடுவ தன்றுகொல் என்று.
(குறள் 1307: புலவி அதிகாரம்)
ஊடலின் உண்டு ஆங்கோர் துன்பம் – ஊடலை விட மிகுதியான துன்பமொன்று உண்டு
புணர்வது – ஊடலுக்குப்பின் கூடுமின்பம்
நீடுவது அன்றுகொல் என்று – நீளுமோ, நீளாதோ என்னும் துன்பமே!
இக்குறள் காதலன், காதலி என்று இருவருக்குமே பொருந்துவதாம்! இருவருக்குமே ஊடலை விட துன்பமான ஒன்றுண்டாம். அது என்னவாக இருக்கமுடியும்? ஊடலுக்குப் பின் அவர்கள் கூடிப் பெறும் கலவியின்பம் நீட்டிக்குமோ, நீட்டிக்காதோ என்ற எண்ணந்தரும் துன்பமே அது!
Transliteration:
UDalin uNDAngOr tunbam puNarvadu
nIDuva danRukol enRu
UDalin uND(u) AngOr tunbam – there is a bigger pain than love-quarrel
puNarvadu – (whether) the conjugal union
nIDuva danRukol enRu – the pain of thought if it would last or be lost soon
This verse applies to both bonded by love, the man and his beloved maiden. For both there is a pain worse than feigned love-quarrel, if the conjugal union after the making up, would last long or lost soon.
“The doubt if the conjugal union would last long or be lost soon
is worse pain than that of love-quarrel for both maiden and man!
