உணலினும் உண்டது அறல்இனிது காமம்
புணர்தலின் ஊடல் இனிது.
(குறள் 1326: ஊடலுவகை அதிகாரம்)
உணலினும் – ஒருவர் உண்பதிலும்
உண்டது அறல் இனிது – அவர் ஏற்கனவே உண்டதை செரித்தலே இனிதாம்
காமம் புணர்தலின் – அதேபோல் காமத்தால் காதலியோடு கூடுவதிலும்
ஊடல் இனிது – அதற்குமுன் ஊடுதலே இனிதாம்.
ஒருவர் அறுசுவை உண்டி உண்பதில் இன்பம் உண்மையாக இல்லை. ஏற்கனவே உண்டதை முற்றிலுமாக செரிப்பதில்தான் இன்பமே இருக்கிறது. செரிமானம் சரி வர இல்லையெனில், மேலும் மேலும் உண்பதால் என்ன பயன்? அது துன்பமே தவிர இன்பம் இல்லை. அதேபோல்தான், ஊடல் என்பது முதலில் இல்லையெனில், கூடலில் இன்பம் இராது என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். ஊடலுக்குபின் வரும் கூடலே இன்பம் தருவது என்று ஊடலின் உவகையை வலியுறுத்துகிறார் இக்குறளில். குறளின் போக்கிலேயே ஒரு மாற்றுக்குறளும், ‘இதுவே முறை’ என்ற முறையில் மற்றொரு குறளும் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளன.
Transliteration:
uNalinum uNDadu aRalinidu kAmam
puNardalin UDal inidu:
uNalinum – More than eating
uNDadu aRal inidu – digesting what is already eaten is pleasurable
kAmam puNardalin – Likewise, even more than in union with the lover
UDal inidu – love-quarrel is pleasurable (as it yields more pleasure in ensuing union)
In eating feast there is no real delight. It is truly delightful in digesting what has been eaten already completely. If the digestion is not good, what is the use in stuffing the stomach more? It is highly unhealthy and painful eventually. Likewise, if there is no love-quarrel, there is no delight in subsequent union. The pleasurable union is only delightful, when it is after a love-fight. Saying this, vaLLuvar emphasizes the delight of love-quarrel, in this verse.
“It is more delightful to digest food than to keep eating more
Like wise love-quarrel is more delightful, than union before”
