ஊடிப் பெறுகுவம் கொல்லோ நுதல்வெயர்ப்பக்
கூடலில் தோன்றிய உப்பு.

ஊடிப் பெறுகுவம் கொல்லோ – ஊடுவதால் நாம் பெறுவோம் அல்லவோ
நுதல் வெயர்ப்பக் – நெற்றி வேர்க்கும்படியாக
கூடலில் தோன்றிய – கூடி முயங்குவதில் தோன்றுகின்ற
உப்பு – உப்பென்பது சுவையும், அது தரும் இன்பமும்
வேர்க்கும்படியாக கூடி முயங்குவதில் நாம் பெறும் சுவையும், இன்பமும், ஊடுவதால் நாம் மேலும் பெறுவோம் அல்லவா? எவ்வாறு?. இனிப்பு ஒரு சுவைதான். அதன் சுவை பலமடங்காக மிக்குக்காணப்படும், எதிர்மாறாக காரத்தையோ, கசப்பையோ முதலில் உண்டிருந்தால். அதேபோல், ஊடுவதால், பின்பு கிடைக்கும் கூடலில் சுவை மிக்கது என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.
“அமைத் தோளாய்நின் மெய்வாழ் உப்பின் விலைஎய் யாமென” என்று கூடலின் கண் தோன்றிய உப்பை பற்றி அகநானூற்று (390:10-11) வரிகள் கூறும்
Transliteration:
UDip peRUguvam koLLO nudalveyarppak
kUDalil thOnRiya uppu
UDip peRUguvam koLLO – In love-quarrel, won’t we get?
Nudal veyarppak – for the forhead to sweat
kUDalil thOnRiya – that which appeared in love maing
uppu – the taste that is pleasurable
Won’t the lovers get more pleasure than the long, forheads-sweating, physical union in their love-quarrel also? The rhetorical question is to imply the answr “yes”. How? Sweetness is desirable taste; but it tastes even better after eating something hot or sour; likewise, the physical union, after the love-quarrel is even more pleasurable, is what VaLLuvar alludes here.
