84: (Lack of astuteness (Idiocy) – பேதைமை)
[ Idiocy, folly, lack of astuteness is not knowing anything, being utterly foolish; this and the following chapter, both discuss forms of ignorance. This chapter primarily deals with absolute idocy, next one deals with low understanding or imperfect understanding. Both are bad for friendship and worse than that are in enemy state. Parimelazhagar simply puts it as “yaadhum aRiyAmai” meaning, “not knowing anything”, a state of being a nitwit in colloquial terms]

பேதைமை என்பதொன்று யாதெனின் ஏதங்கொண்டு
ஊதியம் போக விடல்.
(குறள் 831: பேதைமை அதிகாரம்)
பேதைமை – மடமை, அறிவீனம்
என்பதொன்று – என்பது மற்ற எல்லா குற்றங்களிலும் மிக்கவொன்றாகும்
யாதெனின் – அது யாது என்றால்
ஏதங்கொண்டு – குற்றவழிகளை கைக்கொண்டு
ஊதியம் – ஆக்கம் தருவனவற்றை
போகவிடல் – செல்ல விடுதல்
ஒருவரின் மடமை, அல்லது அறிவீனம் என்பது மற்ற எல்லாவற்றிலும் மிக்கதொரு குற்றமாம். அத்தகைய பேதமை என்னவெனில், குற்றம் தருவனவற்றைக் கைக்கொண்டு, ஆக்கம் தருவனவற்றைக் கைவிடுதலாகும்.
அருச்சுனன் கீதையில் கண்ணனிடம் தம்முடைய அறிவீனத்தில் பகைவர்கள் செய்வதெல்லாம் மன்னிக்கத்தக்கதில்லையா என்று வினவுகையில், அறியாமை தவறல்ல, அதைப் போக்கும் ஞானத்தைத் தேடாத அறிவீனத்துக்கு தண்டனையே சரியான மருந்து என்பான் கண்ணன். ஆக அறிவீனத்தைக் குற்றமாகப் பார்ப்பது சரியே என்று தோன்றுகிறது. உலகே கல்விக்கூடமாக இருக்கையில் கற்றலுக்குப் பலவழிகள் இருக்கையில், பேதைமையைக் கைக்கொள்வது மற்ற குற்றங்களில் மிக்கதாகும்.
Transliteration:
pEthaimai enbadhonRu yAdhenin EdhangkoNDu
Udhiyam pOga viDal
pEthaimai – foolishness, lack of astuteness
enbadhonRu – – is worse than all other follies
yAdhenin – What that one is
EdhangkoNDu – only taking all the defects
Udhiyam – and that which brings gain
pOgaviDal – letting them go
Folly or lack of astuteness is worse than any fault in a person. Such folly lets a person forego that which is gain, and take only that which brings fault.
In Gita, when Arjuna asks Krishna if it is not the right thing to forgive the idiocy in a person, Krishna answers thus: It is not wrong to lack astuteness or being folly, but when the knowledge to come out of that is there everywhere in this big learning center that the world is, the extent of idiocy that does not seek it to rectify is definitely punishable and the punishment is indeed the cure for that.
Hence it makes sense to think of folly as a greater fault than others.
