குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயும் காத்தல் அரிது.
(குறள் 29: நீத்தார் பெருமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
guNamennum kundReri nindRAr veguLi
kaNamEyum kAththal aridhu.
guNamennum – moral excellence, righteousness
kundReri – ascending to the top of hill (of moral excellence)
nindRAr – who reach the top of the moral excellence
veguLi – anger
kaNamEyum – even for a moment, second
kAththal – to retain (the anger)
aridhu – difficult to (retain the anger)
People with the highest moral excellence and righteousness generally don’t get angry for anything. Even if they do, the anger does not last even for a second. The reason is that they always think of the background of other’s behavior and that keeps them calm and collected even in the worst of situations that can trigger anger.
Another later work, “nAlaDiyAr” also echoes the same thought in one of its poems.
As with other verses in this chapter, the verse need not be exclusively for the renounce beings. This is definitely applicable to anyone and everyone that strives and gets to a high moral standing. But for that it is a statement of a simple fact.
Virtuous ones that have reached the peak of righteousness hill
Can not be angry even for a second, though can get it still
தமிழிலே:
குணமென்னும்– பண்பும், அறநெறியோடு கூடிய இயல்புமாகிய
குன்றேறி– சிகரத்தின் உச்சியில் ஏறி
நின்றார் – நிற்கின்ற ஆன்றோர்க்கு
வெகுளி– கோபத்தை
கணமேயும்– நொடியளவேனும்
காத்தல்– தம்முள் நீடிக்கச் செய்வது
அரிது – கடினம்
பண்பும், அறநெறியும் கூடிய இயல்பினருக்கு கோபம் வருவது அரிது. அப்படியே வந்தாலும் அது நொடிப்பொழுதில் மறைந்துவிடும். கோபம் கண்ணை மறைத்து, கருத்தை அழிக்கும்.
உயர்ந்த பண்பாளர்கள் எப்போதும் மற்றவர்களுடைய செயல்களின் சூழ் நிலைகளையும், அவர்களது நடவடிக்கைகளுக்கான பின் புலத்தையும் புரிந்து கொள்ள கூடியவர்களாக இருப்பதினால், அவர்கள் பொதுவாகக் கோபம் கொள்வதே இல்லை.
வள்ளுவர், அப்படி குணக்குன்றாய் இருப்பவர்களும், கோபம் வரக்கூடிய தருணங்கள் உண்டு, ஆனால் அவ்வாறு வந்தபோது, அக்கோபம் நொடியளவுகூட நீடிக்காது என்கிறார். நாலடியாரில் இதே கருத்தையொட்டி, “நீர்கொண்ட வெப்பம்போல் தானே தணியுமே சீர்கொண்ட சான்றோர் சினம்” எனப்படுகிறது.
இக்குறளின் கருத்து, துறவு நிலையில் இருப்பவர் என்றில்லாது, உயர்ந்த பண்பாளர்கள் எல்லோருக்குமே பொருந்தக்கூடிய குறள்தான். மற்றபடி, இது குங்குமம் சிவப்பு போன்ற உண்மைதான். உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனிதான்!
