அருளல்ல தியாதெனிற் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பொருளல்ல தவ்வூன் தினல்.
(குறள் 254: புலால்மறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aruLalla dhiyAdhenin kollAmai kORal
poruLalla thavvUn thinal
aruL alladhi(u) – Not being kind
yAdhenin – what is it? (not being kind)
kollAmai – the doctrine of not killing
kORal – slaying that (good) doctrine itself
poruLallath(u) – Even worse, meaningless is
avvUn thinal – eating the meat by killing
Two negatives conjoined to gether to stress a subject is a unique idea. vaLLuvar has just used that technique in this verse. The usage of “kollAmai kORal” is to underline and convey how a good deed is spoilt. If he had said this in a simple way, “killing is not a kind act”, that would only be related to just another deed. By saying “kollAmai kORal”, he is pointing to destroying a nice virtue – which is a more powerful way of stressing a point.
To spoil the virtue of not killing is not a graceful or kind deed. Similarly to kill a life and eat its meat, is also meaningless, and a sin. In Parimelazhagar’s commentary, he clearly says, “not killing” is kindness and to destroy such kindness is sinful. The deeds – not killing (kollAmai) and killing (kORal) are likened to the reasons – kindness (aruL) and unkind (alladhu). Similarly reason of “meat eating” is likened to the “sinful” deeds.
Sometimes going through some of these verses make one feel, vaLLuvar is being repetitive. Regardless of how people may justify such repetitiions, just because vaLLuvar has said it or we have put vaLLuvar up on the pedestal that we don’t want to be blind of his “could have been follies”, we need a fresh looking glass. Even vaLLuvar woud not want such sycophantic support to his work.

அருளல்லதி(து) – அருளில்லாமை என்பது
யாதெனிற் – எதுவோ என்றால்
கொல்லாமை – அது பிறவுயிரை கொல்லாத கொள்கையையே
கோறல் – கொல்லுதல்
பொருளல்லது – அதேபோல் பொருளற்ற செயலானது என்னவெனில்
அவ்வூன் தினல் – அவ்வாறு கொன்று கொளப்பட்ட இறைச்சியை உண்ணுதல்தான்.
இரண்டு எதிர்மறைகளை ஒன்றோடொட்டிச் சொல்லி ஒரு பொருளை வலிவுடன் சொல்வது ஒரு உத்தி. அதைத்தான் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார். “கொல்லாமைக் கோறல்” என்று சொல்லி, நல்ல செயலை ஒருவர் கெடச்செய்தலை அடிக்கோடிடுகிறார். எளிதாக “கொல்லுதல் அருள் அல்லது” என்று சொல்லியிருந்தால் அது ஒரு செயலைச் சேர்ந்ததாகமட்டும் இருக்கும். “கொல்லாமைக் கோறல்” என்பதன்மூலம் ஒரு பண்பை கெடுத்தலைக் குறிக்கிறார்.
கொல்லாமையை ஒழிவது அருளுடைய செயலன்று. அதேபோல அவ்வாறு ஓருயிரைக் கொன்று அதனுடைய ஊனைத் தின்பதிலும் ஒரு பொருளும் இல்லை, பாவம்தான். பரிமேலழகர் உரையில் அருள் என்பது கொல்லாமையென்றும், அதைக்கோறல் கொல்லாமையல்லது என்றும் விளக்குவார். அவர் கூறும் விளக்கம்: “உபசாரவழக்கால் ‘கொல்லாமை, கோறல்’ ஆகிய காரியங்களை ‘அருள் அல்லது’ எனக் காரணங்கள் ஆக்கியும் ‘ஊன் தின்கை’ ஆகிய காரணத்தைப் ‘பாவம்’ எனக் காரிய மாக்கியும் கூறினார்.”
சில சமயம், சில குறள்களைப் படிக்கும் போது, வள்ளுவர் திரும்ப திரும்பச் சொன்னதையே சொல்லுகிறாரோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது. எப்படித்தான் எல்லோரும் இவற்றை நியாயப்படுத்தினாலும், வள்ளுவரை உயர்ந்த பீடத்தில் அமர்த்திவிட்டதாலும், வள்ளுவரில் தவறு இருக்குமா என்ற ஐயத்தினாலும், வள்ளுவரைத் தவறு என்பதா என்ற கண்மூடித்தனமாக பின்தொடர்தலாலும், அவருடைய படைப்பிலும் குற்றம் இருந்திருக்கமுடியும் என்று சிந்திக்க மறுக்கிறார்கள். இது ஒரு வெறித்தனமான பின்தொடர்வுதான்.
இன்றெனது குறள்:
கொல்லாமை கொல்லலருள் அல்லதவ் வூனுணலோ
பொல்லாப் பொருளுமாகு மாம்.
