நன்றாகும் ஆக்கம் பெரிதெனினும் சான்றோர்க்குக்
கொன்றாகும் ஆக்கங் கடை.
(குறள் 328: கொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
nanRAgum Akkam peridheninum sAnROrkkuk
konRagum Akkam kaDai
nanRAgum – good it is
Akkam – the wealth
peridheninum – that killing other lives for self sustenance, evev if enormous
sAnROrkkuk– for learned people
konRagum – by killing other lives
Akkam – the wealth they get is
kaDai – really lowly.
However greater the gains are, learned ascetics of virtuous knowledge will consider the wealth attained by killing a life as unworthy. This verse underscores how debasing killing inferior life forms is, especially to the renounced. Ascetics have undertaken implicitly, “not killing” as an austerity for their chosen path. However glorious the weath obtained because of killing another life for self-properity, they would only consider it utterly demeaning.
“However greater the gains are, if attained by killing,
Learned of virtuous leaning’ll consider it demeaning”
தமிழிலே:
நன்றாகும் – சிறப்பானதான
ஆக்கம் – செல்வம் (பிற உயிர்களைக் கொல்வதால்)
பெரிதெனினும் – அளவில் மிகுந்ததேயாயினும்
சான்றோர்க்குக் – நன்னெறிகளைக் கற்று கல்வியில் மிக்காருக்கு
கொன்றாகும் – பிற உயிர்களைக் கொல்வதால்
ஆக்கங் – வரக்கூடிய செல்வமானது
கடை.- இழிவானதே
சிறப்பானதான செல்வம், அளவில் எவ்வளவு பெரியதாக இருப்பினும், நெறிசார்ந்த கல்வியில் சிறந்த ஆன்றோர்க்கு அச்செல்வம் ஓருயிரைக் கொல்வதால் கிடைக்குமானால் அதை இழிவென்றே கருதுவர். இக்குறள் கொல்லாமையின் இழிவை அடிக்கோடிட்டுக் காட்டுகிறது. நன்னெறிகளை கற்று உணர்ந்து துறவு மேற்கொண்டவர்கள், கொல்லாமையாகிய விரதத்தைப் பூண்டவர்கள். அவர்களுக்கு சிறப்பினைத் தரும் செல்வம் பொருட்டல்ல. அதுவும் அச்செல்வம் பிறவுயிர்களைக் கொல்வதால் கிடைக்குமானால்.
