கொலைவினைய ராகிய மாக்கள் புலைவினையர்
புன்மை தெரிவா ரகத்து.
(குறள் 329: கொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Kolaivinaiya rAgiya mAkkaL pulaivinaiyar
Punmai therivA ragaththu
KolaivinaiyarAgiya – The butchers that kill life forms
mAkkaL – they are theyselves like animals lacking sixth sense
pulai vinaiyar – they are like butchers that kill as a profession for food.
Punmai therivAr – those who understand the lowly nature of butchering
Agaththu – in their hearts.
Except for M.Karunanidhi, who has written commentary for ThirukkuraL in recent times, none has pointed out the word meaning of “mAkkaL” as animals lacking 6th sense. vaLLuvar says, those who kill for whatever reason are like animals themselves. Such killers are conisdered lowly beings by penitents that know this to be sinful act in their hearts. In fact this comparison would be unfair to animals. They kill only for food or when their life is in danger.
Even non-vegetarians don’t kill something for their own food. They only buy meat from somebody that has killed. It is because of the thought that killing is sinful, but eating is not.
This verse shows that the butchers were placed among the lowest in the social strata during vaLLuvar’s times. Perhaps vaLLuvar expresses his mind as the thought of penitents. However, hunting was the only pursuit for humans to get food, before they knew agrarianism and started doing agriculture for food. As the human society evolved, as a thinking, knowledge based one,all these moralistic thoughts must have come in to existence.

தமிழிலே:
கொலைவினையர் ஆகிய – மற்ற உயிரினங்களை கொல்பவர்
மாக்கள் – பகுத்தறியா மிருகங்களே
புலைவினையர் – அவர்கள் உணவுக்காக கொலைசெய்யும் புலைத் தொழிலர்களே, (கசாப்புத் தொழிலர்கள்)
புன்மை தெரிவா(ர்) – அத்தொழிலின் இழிமை அறிந்த (துறவோர்களின்)
அகத்து – நெஞ்சத்தில்
தற்காலத்தில் உரையெழுதியுள்ள மு,கருணாநிதியைத் தவிர வேறு யாருமே மாக்கள் என்ற சொல்லுக்குண்டான பொருளான “பகுத்தறியும் திறனில்லா மக்களாகச்”, அதாவது ஆறாமறிவு இல்லாத மிருகங்களாகச் சுட்டவில்லை. கொலை செய்கின்றவர்களை, பகுத்தறியும் அறிவில்லாத மிருகங்கள் போல்வராம் மனிதர்களை, உணவுக்காக மிருகங்களைக் கொல்லும் புலைத்தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்ட புலையர் என்றே நினைப்பர். அத்தொழிலின் இழிமையை அறிந்த துறவோர் தம் நெஞ்சத்து.
புலைத்தொழில் இழிமை என்ற கருத்தினாலேதான் கொன்றவற்றைத் தின்பவர்கள் கூட தாங்களாக் கொல்வதில்லை. கொல்பவர்களுக்குத்தானே பாவம், கொன்றதை தின்போருக்கு ஒன்றுமில்லை என்பவர்களே பெரும்பாலும் புலால் உண்பவர்கள். “கொன்றால் பாவம் தின்றால் போச்சு” என்ற வழக்கும் அதனாலேதான் வந்ததோ?
இக்குறள், புலையர் செய்வது அவர்கள் தொழில் நிமித்தமேயானாலும், அவர்களைச் சமூகத்தில் இழிவானவராகக் கருதப்பட்டதை காட்டுகிறது. தவிர வள்ளுவரே அவருடைய கருத்தியலை, அத்தகையவர்களை மிருகங்களாகவே எண்ணுவதை, துறவிகளின்மேல் ஏற்றிச் சொல்கிறார்,
