எண்ணென்ப வேனை யெழுத்தென்ப விவ்விரண்டுங்
கண்ணென்ப வாழு முயிர்க்கு

Transliteration:
eNNenba vEnai yezhuththenba viviranDung
kaNNenba vAzhu muyirkku
eNNenba – what uneducated call as just numbers, the subject of mathematics
Enai – other than that
yezhuththenba – what they also call as just alphabets, the literature and grammar
iviranDung – these two
kaNNenba – are known as eyes that see the life in proper light
vAzhumuyirkku – for humanbeings
“AuvayyAr says: “eNNum ezhuththum kaNNenath thagum” in her great work of KonRaivEndhan stressing the same thought expressed by vaLLuvar – The knowledge of mathematics and literature are light giving eyes for everyone! Those who have not lit their light of knowledge will just call number and letter, the knowledge of mathematics and literature which serve the light of life for educated.
Appar would call the God of third eye, which is incidentally and metaphorically called as the eye of knowledge, as the embodiment of all sciences and literature. Though the word “eN” means numbers, it must be construed all sciences that deal with numbers.

தமிழிலே:
எண்ணென்ப – கல்லார் எண் என்று சொல்லும் கணிதம்
ஏனை – மற்றும்
எழுத்தென்ப – அவர்களே எழுத்து என்று சொல்லும் இலக்கியம் மற்றும் இலக்கணம்
இவ்விரண்டுங் – ஆகிய இவ்விரண்டுமே
கண்ணென்ப – உலகை அறிவுக்கண்ணால் காணக்கூடிய வாழ்க்கைக்கு ஒளியாகிய கண்கள் போன்றன
வாழுமுயிர்க்கு – வாழ்கின்ற உயிர்களுக்கு
“எண்ணும் எழுத்தும் கண்ணெணத்தகும்” என்று ஔவையார் கொன்றை வேந்தனில் சொல்கிறார். அறிவுக்கண் திறவாத கல்லாதவர்கள், மிகவும் எளிமையான முறையிலே எண் மற்றும் எழுத்து என்று அறிந்திருக்கிற கணிதமும், இலக்கிய இலக்கணங்களும், உலகில் உயிரோடு உள்ளவர்கள் என்று சொல்லத்தக்க கற்றவர்களுக்கு வாழ்விற்கு ஒளிதரும் கண்கள் போன்றன.
எழுத்தறிய தீரும் இழிதகைமை தீர்ந்தான்
மொழித்திறத்தின் முட்டறுப்பா னாகும் – மொழித்திறத்தின்
முட்டறுத்த நல்லோன் முதனூற் பொருளணர்ந்து
கட்டறுத்து வீடு பெறும்
என்ற பாடல் மொழியறிதலின் சிறப்பைக் .கூறுகிறது. சிறுபஞ்சமூலப் பாடல்வரியும் “கண்ணுங்காற் கண்ணும் கணிதம் எழுத்து” என்று ஒருவரியில் இக்கருத்தையே சொல்கிறது. அப்பரும் கண்ணுதற் கடவுளை, “எண்ணும் எழுத்தும் குறியுமறிபவர்” என்கிறார்.

ஒளிதரும் கண்கள் கணிதம் மொழியாம்
ஒளியிலார்க் கெண்ணெழுத் தாம்
