பற்றுள்ளம் என்னும் இவறன்மை எற்றுள்ளும்
எண்ணப் படுவதொன் றன்று.
(குறள் 438: குற்றம் கடிதல்அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
paRRuLLam ennum ivaRanmai eRRuLLum
eNNap paDuvathon RanRu
paRRuLLam ennum – Having avarice for the wealth
ivaRanmai – miserliness because of that, i.e. being niggard
eRRuLLum – among all the faults
eNNappaDuvath(u) – to kept as par
onRanRu – is not the one to be kept so (in fact it is even worse)
Insatiable thirst to accumulate wealth and not spending either for self or for the good of others is the worst fault of a niggard. This fault cannot even be placed with other faults that may have some recourse to correct. To chide a miserly attitude, one would say, such persons would not even shoo away a crow with their hand while they are eating fearing it would inadvertently feed the bird with a morsel stuck in the hand. Why would this be the worst fault? Because such possessive greed is the beginning and foundation for all faults!
Kambar in ThaaDagai vadhai paDalam expresses a similar thought by saying there is none worse than the shocking tie to wealth as that would destroy all the invaluable virtuousity in a person.

தமிழிலே:
பற்றுள்ளம் என்னும் – செல்வத்தின் மேல் ஆசைக்கொண்ட உள்ளம் உடைத்தல்
இவறன்மை – அதனால் வரக்கூடிய கருமித்தனம்
எற்றுள்ளும் – குற்றங்கள் யாவற்றிலும்
எண்ணப்படுவ(து) – வைத்து எண்ணப்படக்கூடிய
ஒன்றன்று – ஒன்றல்ல (அவற்றிலும் கொடுங்குற்றம் என்ற பொருள் தொக்கி நிற்கும்)
செல்வத்தின் மீது அதிக ஆசை கொண்டு, அதன் காரணமாக அதை சேர்த்து வைத்து, தன்னுடைய தேவைகளுக்காகவோ, அல்லது பிறருக்கு நன்மைகளைப் பயப்பதற்கோ செலவு செய்யாத கருமித்தனத்தைப் போல கொடிய குற்றம் ஏதுமில்லை. இது மற்றைய குற்றங்களோடுகூட வைக்கப்படமுடியாத கொடுங்குற்றம் என்று கூறுகிற குறளிது. எச்சைக்கையால் காக்கயைக் கூட விரட்டாத கருமித்தனம் பற்றி கேள்விப்படுகிறோம். இது மற்ற குற்றங்களையும் விட தீயது என்றது ஆசையே அனைத்துக் குற்றங்களுக்கும் அடித்தளம் என்பதினால்.
கருமித்தனம் குணங்களை அழிக்கும் தீது என்பதை கம்பராமாயண, தாடகை வதப்படலப் பாடலொன்றும் தெரிவிக்கிறது. “உளப்பரும் பிணிப்பறா உலோபம் ஒன்றுமே அளப்பருங் குணங்களை அழிக்கு மாறுபோல்”. நடுக்குறச் செய்யும் செல்வத்தின் பிணைப்பாகிய கருமித்தனம் ஒன்றே ஒருவருக்கு மதிப்பிடமுடியாத குணநலன்களயும் அழிக்கக்கூடிய தீமை என்கிறார் கம்பரும்,
இன்றெனது குறள்:
யாருக்கும் ஈயாமை யாவிலுமே தீயகுற்றம்
பாருக்குள் மாந்தர் தமக்கு
