பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற
சிலசொல்லல் தேற்றா தவர்.

பலசொல்லக் – வெற்றாய் பிதற்றிப் பலவாராய் பேச
காமுறுவர் – விழைவர்
மன்ற – தெளிவாக
மாசற்ற – குற்றமற்ற
சிலசொல்லல் – ஒரு சில சொற்கள்கூட
தேற்றாதவர் – தன்னால் பேச இயலாதவர்
தெளிவாக, குற்றமற்ற சில சொற்களைப் பேசும் திறமையிலாராக இருக்கும் சிலரே, பிதற்றலாகப் பலச் சொற்களைத் தெளிவும், பொருளும் இன்றி பேசுவதற்கு விழைவர். அடுக்குச் சொற்களால் அழகுபடுத்திப் பேசுவதையே பேச்சுத்திறமையென்று, உறுபயன் பற்றி ஒன்றுமறியாதவர்களே அவ்வாறு பேசுவர்.
இக்கருத்தையே கூறும் நாலடியார் பாடல்:
சொற்றாற்றுக் கொண்டு சுனைத்தெழுதல் காமுறுவர்,
கற்றாற்றல் வன்மையுந் தாந்தேறார், -கற்ற
செலவுரைக்கும் ஆறறியார், தோற்ப தறியார்,
பலவுரைக்கும் மாந்தர் பலர்.
நூல் நுட்பங்களைக் கற்றறிந்து ஒழுகும் வல்லமையுந் தாம் தெளியாது, தாம் கற்ற சிலவற்றைக் கேட்பவர் உள்ளத்திற் பதியும்படி எடுத்துரைக்கும் முறையையும் அறியாது, தம்சொற்கள் பயன்படுதலின்றி வீணாகி ஒழிதலையுங் கருதாது, ஒன்றைப் புலப்படுத்தும்பொருட்டு இவ்வாறு பல சொற்கள் சொல்லி அவம்படும் மாந்தர் உலகிற் பலராவர்; அத்தகையோர், சொல்லாகிய முட்கோல் கொண்டு நாத்தினவெடுத்துப் பேச முற்படுதலை மிக விரும்பும் இயல்பினர், என்கிறது மேற்கண்ட நாலடியார் பாடல்.
Transliterarion:
palasollak kAmuRuvar manRamA saRRa
silasollal tERRA davar
palasollak – indulging in useless blabber
kAmuRuvar – will desire, a person that
manRa – clearly
mAsaRRa – without any flaws
silasollal – even a few words
tERRAdavar – can not utter.
There are persons that cannot utter, even a few clearly articulated, flawless words; but they would desire to copiously blabber and be heard by many. Such people believe that words beautifully arranged, would attract listeners, even if there is substance in what they say.
A nAlaDiyAr poem calls such people without erudition as those that have thorns in their tongue and have the urge to blabber, no matter if what they say is useful.
“Persons that cannot utter even a few words of sense
Would desire to blabber copiously without substance”
