இணரூழ்த்தும் நாறா மலரனையர் கற்றது
உணர விரித்துரையா தார்.
(குறள் 650: சொல்வன்மை அதிகாரம்)
இணர் – பூக்கள் கொத்தாக
ஊழ்த்தும் – மலர்ந்தும்
நாறா – மணம் வீசாத
மலரனையர் – பூக்களைப் போன்றவர்
கற்றது – தாம் கற்றதை
உணர – பிறர் அறிந்து உணருமாறு
விரித்து – விரிவாக, விளங்கும்படியாக
உரையாதார் – சொல்லத் தெரியாதார்
பல நூல்களைக் கற்றறிந்த அறிவுடையோராயிருந்தும், பிறர்க்கு அவற்றை உணர, விளங்க, விரித்துச் சொல்லத் தெரியாதவர், பூக்கள் கொத்தாக மலர்ந்தும், கண்களுக்கு அழகாகத் தெரிந்தும், வாசமற்று இருப்பது போலாகும். சொல்வன்மை தராத அக்கல்வி வெற்றலங்காரமே, மணமில்லாப் பூக்களைப் போல், சூடுவதற்கும், அருச்சனைகளுக்கும் பயன்படாத தன்மையதே.
இக்குறளின் கருத்தையொட்டியே அவை அஞ்சாமை அதிகாரத்தின் இறுதிக்குறளையும் சொல்லுகிறார் வள்ளுவர். கற்றோர் அவையிலே கற்றறிந்த ஒருவன் பேச அஞ்சுவது, கல்வி அறிவு இருந்தும் இல்லாதவர்க்கு ஒப்பாவார்.
“உளரெனினும் இல்லாரோ டொப்பர் களனஞ்சி
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லா தார்”.
Transliteration:
iNaRuzhthum nARA malaranaiyar kaRRadu
uNara viriththuraiyA dAr
iNaR – blooming flower bunch
uzhthum – even when it blossoms
nARA – scentless
malaranaiyar – like such flowers
kaRRadu – what they have learned
uNara – for others to understand
virithth(u) – in detail
uraiyAdAr – cannot express.
Even if learned in many streams of knowledge, if a person cannot explain in some detail to others, they are like scentless flowers though blossomed in bunches, just a pretty sight, and purposeless beauty. They are neither useful for personal adornment nor for offering to God.
VaLLuvar has written another verse (730) expressing the same in the context of not fearing a congregation of learned, a later chapter. He calls them as non-existent when they are not able to articulate with all the education in their baggage.
“If a minister is not able to articulate, explain, though a man of high erudition,
his knowledge is akin to bunch of scentless blossoms, useless beautification”
