இல்லாரை எல்லாரும் எள்ளுவர் செல்வரை
எல்லாரும் செய்வர் சிறப்பு.
(குறள் 752: பொருள்செயல் வகை அதிகாரம்)
இல்லாரை – செல்வமில்லாதவரை
எல்லாரும் எள்ளுவர் – எல்லோரும் இகழுவர்
செல்வரை – ஆக்கமாகிய செல்வம் உள்ளவரை
எல்லாரும் செய்வர் – எல்லோரும் கொண்டாடுவர்
சிறப்பு – மேலும் பெருமையாக
கடந்த குறளின் கருத்தையொட்டியே இக்குறளும். செல்வமுடைத்தவரை எல்லோரும் மதிப்பர் என்றும், அஃதில்லாதவரை இகழ்ந்து நகைப்புக்குரியராக கருதுவர் என்றும் கூறுகிறது. இக்குறளின் கருத்து கேள்விக்குரியதே!
“பொருளில்லார்க்கு இவ்வுலகமில்லை” என்று பேச்சு வழக்கிலே சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், “கற்றோர்க்கு சென்றவிடமெல்லாம் சிறப்பு” என்றும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளதே. கல்வியே அவர்தம் பொருளென்று கொண்டால் அப்போது கல்வியில் சிறந்தவரை இவ்வுலகம் கொண்டாடும் என்பதில் ஐயம் இல்லை. ஆனால் இக்குறளைப் பொருத்தவரை அவ்வாறும் கொள்ளவும் முடியாது; ஏனெனில் இவ்வதிகாரம் பொருசெயல் வகை பற்றியது. அதாவது எவ்வாறு பொருளை ஈட்டவேண்டுமென்பதைப் பற்றியது.
கி.வா.ஜ-வின் ஆராய்ச்சிப் பதிப்பிலே பல இலக்கியப் பாடல்களில் ஒத்த கருத்துக்கள் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளதை சுட்டியுள்ளார். நாலடியார், அப்பர் தேவாரம், கம்ப இராமாயணம், பழமமொழி என்று பல இலக்கிய மேற்கோள்கள் இருந்தும், முற்றுக் கருத்தையும் கூறும், கீழ்வரும் பழமொழிப் பாடல் கவனிக்கத்தக்கது, படிக்கும் வழியே பொருள் விளங்க எழுதப்பட்ட பாடல்.
முட்டின் றொருவர் உடைய பொழுதின்கண்
அட்டிற்றுத் தின்பவர் ஆயிரவர் ஆபவே
கட்டலர்தார் மார்ப கலியூழிக் காலத்துக்
கெட்டார்க்கு நட்டாரோ இல்
(முட்டின்றி ஒருவர் – உச்சமிது என்று சொல்ல முடியாத அளவுக்கு மிகுதியாக, குறைவின்றி;
அட்டு இற்று – சமைக்கப் பட்ட உணவு தீருமட்டும்;
கெட்டார்க்கு – செல்வமிழந்து வறுமையுற்றவர்க்கு;
நட்டார் – நண்பர்கள்)
Transliteration:
illArai ellOrum eLLuvar selvarai
ellOrum seivar siRappu
illArai – those who are not wealthy
ellOrum eLLuvar – everyone will ridicule and speak of them slightly
selvarai – but to the wealthy
ellOrum seivar – all will celebrate
siRappu – their glory
This verse, along the lines of previous verse says that everyone will value and celebrate the wealthy; and everyone will ridicule and speak slightly of those that are not wealthy, especialy when they lost everything – a questionable thought and seems like another chapter filler.
Though there is an adage, “this world is not for have-not’s”, we also know of another, “for educated, wherever they go they have glory”. If education is construed as wealth, which it is, then it makes sense that the world will celebrate the wealthy in that sense; but here, it cannot be taken that way either, as this chapter is all about the way of making wealth.
Ki.vA.Ja’s research compilation edition cites a lot of poems form Sangam to later literature. One poem from Pazhamozhi nAnUru stands out and conveys the thought expressed in this verse. “Thousand will come and eat all that is cooked without limit, when someone has un-diminishing wealth. When a person loses all that he has, there are no friends anymore.”

When not wealthy, only ridicule without beckon”
