அறிவின்மை இன்மையுள் இன்மை பிறிதின்மை
இன்மையா வையா துலகு.
(குறள் 841: புல்லறிவாண்மை அதிகாரம்)
அறிவின்மை – அறிவில்லாமையே
இன்மையுள் இன்மை – இல்லாமையெல்லாவற்றுள்ளும் முதன்மையான இல்லாமையாம்
பிறிதின்மை – மற்ற இல்லாமை என்று சொல்லப்படுவதெல்லாம்
இன்மையா – இல்லாமையாக
வையாது உலகு – கருதாதது இவ்வுலகம்.
அறிவுடைமை அதிகாரத்தின் இறுதிக் குறளில், “அறிவுடையார் எல்லாம் உடையார் அறிவிலார் என்னுடைய ரேனும் இலர்” என்று வள்ளுவர் ஏற்கனவே சொல்லியிருக்கிற கருத்தின் மற்றொரு வடிவம் இக்குறள். அறிவில்லாமையே எல்லா இல்லாமைக்குள்ளும் முதலாய இல்லாமை. அதற்கு விஞ்சிய இல்லாமை இல்லை. மற்றவற்றை அவ்வாறும் கருதாது இவ்வுலகு என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
நாலடியார் பாடல், அறிவின்மையை, “நுண்ணுணர்வின்மை வறுமை” என்கிறது. பழமொழிப்பாடலும், “அறிவினால் மாட்சியொன்றில்லா ஒருவன் பிறிதினால் மாண்ட தெவனாம்” என்னும்.
Transliteration:
aRivinmai inmaiyuL inmai piRidhinamai
inmaiyA vaiyA dulagu
aRivinmai – Being ignorant
inmaiyuL inmai – is the the worst among all that one can lack.
piRidhinamai – Not having others
inmaiyA – as deficient
vaiyAdu ulagu – the world will not consider as deficit.
In the last verse of chapter on “possession of wisdom”, vaLLuvar has already said rather forcefully about not having the wisdom or being ignorant – SuddhAnanda BharatiyAr expresses the same, in a couplet, “who have wisdom they are all full, Whatev’r they own, misfits are nil. This verse says it directly. Among all that one lacks, the worst is being ignorant, not having an iota of wisdom. World will also place ignorance as the primary deficiency ahead of others.
nAlaDiyAr verse calls it “poorer in wisdom”.
“Among all the deficiencies, the worst is being ignorant
The world also will not place other dearth as important”

மற்றவொன்றும் இன்மையன்று உற்ற அறிவின்மை
முற்றுமின்மை என்னும் உலகு
